SSG Precision Optronics, Inc. is a recognized leader in the world of space and airborne telescopes and electro-mechanical subsystems. The company developed key technologies and designs for applications in strategic and tactical optical systems and continues to invest and pursue R&D opportunities. SSG has recently expanded into high end, moderate volume precision manufacturing capabilities to further broaden its position in tactical applications. SSG recently acquired Tinsley Laboratories, the established leader in the design and manufacture of precision optical components, assemblies and sub-systems. Tinsley is known for aspheric manufacturing for space band tactical systems e.g., Hubble Space Telescope, COSTAR upgrade, F-16 Head-Up Displays, and numerous other instruments.

In October 1997, SSG moved their system engineering, design and integration, and test facilities to Wilmington. Today, SSG has grown to over 200 employees and contractors. SSG provides system engineering, design, fabrication, testing, and optics manufacturing to NASA, DOD, major aerospace firms, and several commercial customers.

SSG has delivered over 40 space and aircraft subsystems, covering the wavebands from the Ultraviolet to Longwave Infrared (LWIR). Materials used for the optics and structures include aluminum, beryllium, silicon carbide, glass, composites, and refractors. The optical designs contain on-axis and off-axis elements, aspheric and spherical mirrors.

In December 2001, with assistance from its equity partner, Parthenon Capital, SSG purchased Tinsley Laboratories. Tinsley was founded in 1926 by Clayton Tinsley. Initial products sold were telescopes, mirrors, and mirror kits. Tinsley's product line grew to selling binoculars to the Armed Forces and developing technology for manufacturing TV phosphor exposure aspheric lenses for color TV tube manufacturers. By 1970, Tinsley shifted the emphasis away from telescope manufacturing to precision optical components and systems. Tinsley produces very precise spherical and non-spherical (aspheric) optical components with applications in many industries and for many users. This unique technology allows for the production of precision optics in production and singular quantities. The legacy of quality, delivery, and service has established SSG/Tinsley as the long term provider for the precision optical needs of a diverse group of national and international customers.

SSG/Tinsley currently has been awarded a multi-year contract to manufacture the exacting optical subsystems required for the James Web Space Telescope (JWST) due to launch in 2011. Tinsley is expanding its workforce and capacity in Richmond, CA.
